Joker: When the System is a Joke but it isn’t Funny

Joker (Todd Philipps, 2019) is the hyped up movie of the year. Joakin Phoenix’s outstanding portrayal of the only DC character without an origin story deserves not only an Oscar but also a standing ovation.

However, the acting alone does not suffice for the perfection of a film and the target issues this film revolves around concerning society and its problems like mental health are too shallow.

An outcast, outsider, down at the bottom of the steps. By killing 3 Wall Street guys in the train starts a movement against the system. It is as if everyone was ready and waiting for this moment to come.

A ‘crazy’ mother. Mental health. Another target issue at the core of the film. The ‘crazy’ people are also portrayed at the bottom of society waiting to be heard and waiting to be understood. So will Joker really finally be their voice?

Our tragic-comedic character has no serious intentions to be the voice of anything actually. He just does some crazy stuff and these events artificially lead him to becoming the political man he denies being. He just seems to be going with the flow while trying to discover who his father is.

What is actually so funny is, how hyped up the ‘public’ is to appoint a leader and to go against the system. The film makes it just seem so simple and easy. So sadly aside from the acting, the hype created for this film is actually a joke and it is not even funny.
